Slovak UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Slovakia is a country rich in world, cultural, and natural heritage and in 1993 had three sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Spiš Castle and its surroundings, Banská Štiavnica and Vlkolínec. In 2000, the historic Šaris town of Bardejov was added, followed by the Wooden Churches of the Carpathian mountain area (2008), the Spiš town of Levoča (2009), and two Roman-era monuments (2021): the Gerulata Roman military camp in Bratislava-Rusovce and the Roman military camp Kelemantia in Iža.

Small area but with nine NATIONAL PARKS
The Carpathian Mountain range begins in the westernmost part of Slovakia. And they run undulating throughout the whole country. The highest point of one of the most striking mountain ranges in Europe can be found in the Tatras. There is no higher mountain range further north in Europe. Slovakia is the roof of Central Europe. Water from the mountains runs into the Danube and from there south to the Black Sea, as well as via the Dunajec north to the Baltic Sea. But not only the Tatra Mountains offer excellent opportunities for mountain tourism. You can also experience magnificent views of the landscape from the ridges of the Low Tatras, Malá and Veľká Fatra.

If you want to enjoy waterfalls, gorges and rock formations, visit the Slovak Paradise, the Pieniny, or the Strážovské Hills. The plateaus, meadows with colourful flora and unusual karst formations in the Muránska Planina and Slovak Karst National Parks will take your breath away. Take a trip to observe wild animals in the deep forests of Poloniny, Čergova or Poľana. Your guide through the mountains is one of the best-marked hiking tail networks in the world. Whichever path you choose, you can take a rest in the cosy atmosphere of mountain chalets or traditional shepherd’s cottages.
CULTURE and SIGHTS
Thanks to its location in the centre of Europe, the cultures of the West and East have met in Slovakia over the course of a history spanning several millennia. From Celtic settlements to the remains of Roman fortifications, ancient Slavic cult places, manors and fortified castles of the Ugrian nobility, medieval mining towns, German settlers, the easternmost Gothic sites in Europe, Renaissance and Baroque palaces, Greek Catholic and Orthodox wooden churches, Jewish synagogues and cemeteries, and the interwar functionalism and socialist realism of expanding cities to current projects reflecting the latest trends.

Discover Slovak cities and towns. Horizons of suburban apartment blocks are concealing preserved historical squares and lanes, often places for pleasant social events. Discover more than a hundred Slovak castles and manors. In some you will find themed exhibitions and festivals; in others you may find authentic ruins with beautiful views over the world of your subjects. Visit museums and galleries. You will find everything from ancient archaeological digs to Andy Warhol’s pop art, as well as creations by contemporary artists. Discover war monuments such as tanks from the Second World War in the Valley of Death, or technical sites such as the water mills in the Podunajský region.
SPORTS and ACTIVITIES
Slovakia’s diverse natural environment offers countless options to spend your free time and do sports. Be it high mountain tourism, mountaineering, adrenaline sports, or exciting fun in the water or in the air. If you like active relaxation, you can choose from an extensive range of unique experiences.

The beauty of the Slovak regions can be explored on more than 14,000 km of marked hiking trails and 10,000 km of marked bike trails. On your way, you will encounter the beautiful canyons, waterfalls, gorges, and ravines of the Slovak Paradise, the unique karst formations of the Muran Plateau and the Slovak Karst, the Jánošík Holes in the Malá Fatra (Little Fatra), and the untouched forests in Poloniny. Or conquer one of the peaks of Slovakia’s highest mountain range and the world’s smallest high mountain range – the High Tatras, whose 25 peaks reach an altitude of over 2,500 m.
SPA and RELAX
Slovakia is a country blessed with underground wealth, as the healing power and beneficial effects on the human organism bubble up to the surface from mineral springs. Thanks to their curative power to treat disease and revive health, they have always been regarded as miraculous and remarkable.
The therapeutic spas in Slovakia are among the oldest and best quality in Central Europe. Possibly the best-known spa resort is Piešťany, which became renowned not only for its unique thermal mineral waters, but also for its sulphurous healing mud.

Rajecké Teplice enchants all its visitors with its exclusive antique atmosphere, while the spa Turčianske Teplice spoils you with its unique procedure, the Golden cure. Two spas are unique in Europe. In Sklené Teplice there is the Spelaean steam pool, appropriately named “Parenica”, and in Trenčianske Teplice the Hammam Turkish baths. The exceptionally clean mountain air of the Vysoké Tatry (High Tatra mountains), which are home to several climatic spas, help the treatment of respiratory diseases.
GASTRONOMY
In Slovakia, even the most demanding gourmet will find something for themselves. The regional dishes are as varied as the Slovak landscape. The traditional cuisine of the mountain regions is particularly appealing to lovers of cheese and dairy products. In the lowland places, you can taste spicier foods, cabbage specialties, goose, lokše, or trdelník. Wash it down with delicious wine from the lowlands and the southern slopes of the Carpathians or the Tokaj region. You can also try sweet krumpel from Kremnica, mead from Dolna Krupa, Slovak whiskey from Spiš, or the Žitava spice "Ferrari". Enjoy your meal and cheers!
