It's about culture – Zuzana Kostialova on Tatra Banka Slovakia's way to the top
Zuzana Kostialova, Board Member of Tatra banka in Slovakia, started in the bank more than 20 years ago and worked her way up. An interview on how to establish a new bank, current challenges in the Slovakian banking sector and how to be a female leader.
In your view: What are the biggest challenges for the banking sector in Slovakia currently and what is necessary to overcome those?
The largest challenge and most imminent risk for commercial banks in Slovakia is definitely interference of politicians. Thanks to transparency of the banking sector in Slovakia and monthly reporting of financial results, there are ongoing frequent discussions about the development of profitability of the banking sector and potential re-introduction of a bank levy or other measures – currently mostly in the field of mortgage loans – which could curtail profitability and steering of business as such. In fact, Tatra banka was the leader in ROE in the whole market in 2022. Profitability of the Slovak banking sector in the medium term is rather close to the EU average. The looming risk of an additional tax burden is intensified by parliamentary elections taking place at the end of September and the necessity to consolidate a high budget deficit. Nevertheless, even in such a negative scenario, the strong position of Tatra banka on the local market means that that in medium-term it can grow at the expense of weaker performing peers.
You once said “We are constantly trying to push the boundaries of banking” – is this the secret for success of Tatra banka and what boundaries do you aim to push in the future?
Yes, this statement was also part of the TBSK mission statement. It was and still is lived within our company culture. We are always trying to shift our level of services, products, ideas, and innovations towards new boundaries. For our culture it is very typical to always be better but at the same time unique and substantially differentiate ourselves from our competitors. Our approach and DNA is simply exceptional and is part of our continuous success story in many fields. We are intentionally looking for people who like to work in a company where going the extra mile is normal. On the other hand, we offer our colleagues space for creativity and a flexible working environment. We support innovative thinking and enable our people to be part of something big. We are always following the newest trends and it definitely pays off. How many other Slovak banks can say they are best in the world in certain categories? Finally, we are trying to support one of the most important pillars of each society: culture. For many years we are supporting art in Slovakia via Tatra banka foundation. We are not only educating society but also helping young talents to grow. In our country this is still quite a rare and unique approach.

You joined Tatra banka straight out of school and made it to board member – what was of big support for you on this way and the most important learnings? What would you recommend other females who want to “climb” as high as you?
Let me start with the fact that I never wanted to work in a bank. My dream was to be diplomat; therefore, I have decided to study international trade. But live is full of surprises and in my case, it turned out that corporate banking is somehow my destiny. I was lucky that I was part of a group of young, enthusiastic colleagues who had a chance to participate on building a new modern bank – the first foreign one in Slovakia. I was extremely lucky and always had huge support from my bosses. They have encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and enabled me to grow constantly with new projects, business opportunities and challenges.
What would I recommend to our female colleagues in the RBI group? My sincere tip is to be always yourself! Follow your intuition and if you want to grow in your career use the opportunity, try it, go for it, and enjoy your job. Stay feminine, be natural, always professional and trust yourself. I know – it is easier said than done.
But of course, success will not come without hard work, strong discipline and never forget to stay humble.
Where can you be found in your free time?
My largest source of energy renewal is sport. I have been practicing Astanga yoga for the past 10 years. It is part of my routine and helps me to disconnect from stress. Since the positions are quite challenging, one needs to be 100% focused on the yoga matt. Otherwise, it can easily lead to injury. I also love running and skiing. Movement is simply my joy. During my work as a Corporate Board Member, I am spending most of my time with clients and always meeting many people. Therefore, in my free time I somehow prefer the privacy with a small group of good friends and my family.
